Insurance Adjuster FAQs
I want to become an insurance adjuster. How do I get started?
In general you will need to register for a property adjusting class to provide a foundation for your career. There are numerous adjusting schools, but at ICR Group Claims, Inc., we prefer the Vale National Property Adjusting Course. If you are interested in attending a class, ICR Group Claims, Inc. can sponsor you. Please contact Karin Frewin at (888) 837-4729 extension 704 or at info@icrgroupclaims.com.
Subsequently, you will need to obtain an adjusting license. If your home state licenses adjusters, then you can obtain a license there, if your state does not require a license, we recommend you obtain a non-resident Texas adjuster license. In order to receive a Texas license, you will have to pass a state approved test. The test may be taken through Promissor, a third party educator or through an independent licensing provider. Here is the link to Promissor, www.promissor.com.
After completion of the test, you will need to submit the needed documentation to the Texas Department of Insurance to receive your license. The below website contains a link to all state departments of insurance in the United States. http:\\www.naic.org/state_contacts/sid_websites.htm.
Will my license be all I need to handle claims?
While the license allows you to legally process claims, you will still need experience and education to be successful. Experience of course can be gained on the job, but the education is critical which is why we require the property adjusting course.
When can I get started?
A licensing course is typically about a 1 week class with the test at the end. The Vale National Property Adjusting Course is a 3 week class with dates available on Vale National’s website.
If I have a background in a field such as insurance, should I still take the training course?
Yes. While having such a background is certainly beneficial it is still unlikely to have prepared you for actual claims processing. Additional adjusting training is highly recommended.
Will you hire me once I am licensed and trained in insurance adjusting?
We will place you on our deployment list; however, there is no guarantee that you will be deployed by us. If you are a new adjuster, you must gain field experience before you will be released to work you own claims. If you are new to the field, we will place you on our training list and contact you when training positions are available.
To increase your opportunity of getting called out, first get your license and certifications. Next, learn the estimating software that is required, which is Xactimate. Classes are offered through Xactimate and you may view the schedules for upcoming classes at www.xactimate.com. This is the only software we use, therefore it is imperative that you become familiar with it.
Also, please keep us updated on your status and any changes to your certifications so we can consider you for future deployment. When there is a catastrophe, it is more efficient to know who is available immediately. You can update your status as it changes via our website at www.icrgroupclaims.com and access the (update your availability form).
How much will all of this cost me?
The costs can vary widely depending on what equipment you already own, such as a laptop, digital camera, printer, etc. If you are starting from scratch you can expect to spend $3,000 or more for equipment. Education also varies. The Vale National Property Adjusting Course is $2,295.
